Forward from the Committe Chair:

Welcome to our new 2015 E.T.C. Singles League season. Below I would like to share with you some of the key information you need to know

KEY DATES

The new season starts on Saturday 21 March 2015 and will conclude on last weekend of September, 27 September 2015.

LEAGUE FORMAT (SINGLES):

The Committee has decided to amalgamate group B and C and to stage play-offs for 2 places in Group A that became available following withdrawal by Krzysztof and Christos from E.T.C. The play-offs were completed last week with both Grzegorz and Takeshi securing promotion. Consequently, the Groups A and B for next season will comprise of the following players:

All players will be expected to play 2 matches with each other during the league season in their respective groups. Please ensure you arrange as many games as you can so that the final tables standing is not questioned.

Players will be expected to provide your own equipment; however the Committee is looking to purchase a bulk of tennis balls. I will advise you accordingly in due course regarding this matter.

SCORING SYSTEM

Following a heated debate amongst the members, the Committee has decided to introduce a new 3-2-1-0 scoring system for each match. The below table explains how our new system works:

Match Score (sets):

2:0 - winner wins 3points; loser gets no points

2:1 - winner wins 2 points; loser wins 1 point

As you can see, you will be expected to play your matches in ‘best-of-three’ format i.e. the winner is player who first wins 2 sets.

The winners of each game will be expected to notify of the scores directly to me on [email protected] within 24 hours of completion of the game so that these can be entered into our website erdingtontenniscommunity.co.uk l where you will be able to view your results and position.

PROMOTIONS AND RELEGATIONS

At the end of the season, the players in 13th and 14th places in Group A will be automatically relegated to Group B while the two top players of Group B will be promoted to Group A, also through automatic route.

The players who took 3rd and 4th places in Group B will compete in play-offs with contestants in places 11th and 12th of Group A for places in top group.

The season will end with the top 8 tournament in Group A.

CODE OF CONDUCT

The Committee expects that all players competing in their matches to adhere to basic tennis and fair play rules. In addition, the participant would be expected to observe the following protocol before, during and after each game:

Arrive on time for your match or particularly if you wish to warm up

Warm up is not a practice. The warm up with the racket and with your opponent should take no more than 5 minutes.

Disrespectful behaviour and offensive language will not be tolerated.

Be professional: Do not argue or talk during points, do not smash you racket.

Be respectful and courteous e.g. do not complain about lobs or drop shots, do not embarrass a weak opponent by being condescending, shake hands with your opponent after the game.

Benefit of doubt: As the matches are played without umpires, you should not dispute the points where the ball landed on your opponent side of the court. On other hand, make calls on your own side of the net. Any ball that cannot be called should be good.

Make sure you have at least 2 balls when serving.

Ensure you leave the court free of litter and rubbish once the game is completed.

WALKOVER (WO)

The Committee agreed to a motion of introducing walkovers i.e. awarding of a victory to a contestant because their opponent was disqualified. The walkover will be given against a player in the following circumstances:

If contestant have agreed to arranged match but failed to turn up on the court without notifying their opponent

If contestant failed to respond to the match invitation on 3 separate occasions without offering alternative date

If contestant withdrew or became injured during the game and failed to complete the match

The winner by walkover will be allotted win of 2:0.

COURTS

All E.T.C. members are free to play their matches on any court as agreed with their opponents.

There are numerous free tennis courts available in the local area e.g. Brookvale Park, Rookery Park or Red House Park.

In addition, you may wish to take advantage of playing on floodlit courts at Holford Drive Community Sport Hub in Perry Barr. Note, that the fees apply or alternatively you can purchase an annual membership with the club. I’m still awaiting the final details with regards to accessing the Holford Drive next season.

COACHING

Throughout the season, there will be coaching available for E.T.C. members. If you are interested, please speak to Nigel, Danny, Takeshi or Michal for further details.

Enjoy your new season and have fun!
